January 2013 Jeep Shots

While digitally thumbing through old Jeep Shots entries we came across some photos of a truly timeless jeep, a ’43 GPW owned by Clint from Alaska in an email from 2004. Unfortunately, we don’t have a tech sheet on the old Jeep (that’s probably why we never used it), and so we are left guessing what modifications the GPW has. Here’s what we spotted in the photos: a Warn full-float kit in what must be an offset Dana 44 rear axle, a GM tilt steering column, hanging pedals, a Saginaw power steering conversion, a Warn winch, heavy-duty shackles, an old school Smittybilt rollbar and front cage kit, and a front Ox Locker in a built Dana 30. Not sure what mill or transmission the old girl is running, but any way you look at it, it’s a sweet Jeep, Clint. If you have more info, or an update on the Jeep send us another email.

Oops. Ricky Leverett, President of Aces 4x4 club of Allegan, Michigan, found the bottom to the hole at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes using his home brew ’94/’96 Cherokee. When on dry land, the XJ runs a 4.0L bolted to an AW4 and an NP231. The front axle is a temporary place holder in the form of an open Dana 30. Out back a welded 8.25 with stock gears provides go until new axles can be bought and built. An eight-point cage protects all occupants. The Jeep also runs onboard air to fill those 37x12.5R15 Parnelli Dirt Grips mounted on 15x8 black steelies. Other cool mods include 1¼-inch, 0.250-wal DOM draglink and tierod with 1-ton tie-rod ends. A MileMarker winch rescues the XJ from the drink when in necessary. The suspension is a home brew mix of 8-inch coils and a Y-linked long-arm front suspension with 7½-inch custom-assembled leaf packs in the rear and 1½-inch shackles.

Winch Go Poop!
This is Tad’s TJ. Sorry, Tad, we bet you were having a bad day when this photo was taken. Too bad the winch gave up the ghost and pooped its guts out all over the trail. Good thing Kyle was there with his ’82 Scrambler to give you a tug. Don’t mind us, we will just stare at your misery for a minute studying the insides of a very broken winch. Oh—that’s what winch guts look like. Thanks, Tad, for unwillingly allowing us to bask in your misery. By the way, that’s a darn nice Rubicon you have there. We are digging the flat fenders and CJ marker lights in the TJ grille. Oh yeah, you can thank Kyle for sending us this photo. That’s what friends are for!

I Can See Arkansaw From Here!
Chris Blackstone from Little Rock, Arkansaw…er, Arkansas, submitted a photo of his ’07 two- door JK showing its flex on a rock on Imogene Pass Trail in the mountains of Colorado. The Wrangler gets down the trail thanks to the 3.8L V-6, auto tranny, and stock NP231. The 4.10 gears spin inside a Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear axle. A mild Rubicon Express 2-inch lift allows space for 33-inch Nitto Mud Grapplers on 16x8 Pro Comp wheels.

Superwonderbar! German Cherokee
Back in ’09 Eric Martin sent us photos of a nice ’88 two-door XJ that he bought in Germany while serving Uncle Sam as a member of the U.S. Army. Apparently the XJ was bought from a junkyard in Germany and Eric built the rig with parts sent over from the US thanks to the military snail-mail system. Even though it took some time (6-8 weeks) for some of the larger items to reach him, Eric built this Cherokee piece-by-piece. The XJ features a Renix-injected 4.0L, an AW4 tranny, NP 231J T-case, a vacuum-disconnect Dana 30 front with an Aussie locker, and a non-C-clip Dana “Turdy Five” out back. Lift is from a Rough Country kit. American Racing wheels hold some 31x10.50R15 Recip 4x4 Trial tires. Apparently these are some Portuguese off-road tires.

Ah, Mucho Bella Jeepo, el CJ-3B!
Okay, if you can tell we can’t speak Italian. Nope not even a little, but we bet Marc Hathaway, stationed at the Naval Air Station, Sigonella Sicily, Italy, can—at least a little. Marc submitted this picture of his ’76 CJ-3B. What, a ’76 CJ-3B? Yep that’s what it is. This particular CJ-3B was built in Spain by the Viasa Company. Marc bought the little Jeep as it was headed to the scrap heap. Even though more parts were in the back than were bolted on the Jeep, Marc got the old girl running again. Marc now daily drives the tan Jeep around the Italian island since his wife has his ’00 TJ on permanent loan. Power comes from Perkins Diesel with a Spicer 18 T-case connected to a Dana 25 front and Dana 44 rear axles. The stock 7.00x15 tires are long-gone and have been replaced by “some Euro-size tires” according to Marc.

These photos were submitted to Jp in 2007 by Jay Randall, the proud owner and builder of this ’78 CJ-7. Jay tells us that the Jeep is powered by a 304 V-8. The engine sends exhaust out via tri-Y headers and a 21⁄4-inch exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. A Ford T-18 with a 6.32 First gear turns a clocked and twin-sticked Dana 300.The Dana 30 and Model 20 spin 4:11 gears. A Lock-Right locker front and Detroit Locker rear keep the 35x12.50R15s turning come what may. Suspension is a spring-over with 21⁄2-inch Rancho springs, 12-inch-travel Bilstein shocks, and a 11⁄2-inch body lift. The Jeep is also outfitted with on-board air thanks to a converted York compressor. Mastercraft Rubicon seats and five-point race harnesses hold occupants who ride under a full rollcage. A Warn 8274 winch is there for fast extraction. Other features include TJ fender flares and trimmed fenders, a Bestop Supertop, and Bestop bikini top depending on the weather.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!
Apparently a picture of this car-crushing flattie has already graced the hallowed pages of Jp. Mike Gardner of Aberdeen, Maryland, sent in a “before” picture of this Jeep that we ran in our Sept. ’06 issue. Apparently back then the little Jeep was a bit rough and looked like a “turd” according to Mike. Well, now we are glad to show a non-turdesque “after” shot of the mostly stock CJ. The Jeep is a VEC (very early civilian) ’45 CJ-2A. The upgrades are a boxed frame, a 12-volt conversion, Rhino Lining under the tub, a 13⁄4-inch lift, and 31x9.50R15 Swamper TSL radials. Mike tells us he drives his restomod CJ to and from work every day, rain or shine, while his ’10 JK Unlimited just collects dust. That’s a darn nice flattie, man!
