Studdin’If you think pulling the cab is easier, you’ve never lived in the Rust Belt.
Wish I would’ve known about this about two months ago. I pulled the cab and it was no fun.
As the story (“Studdin’,” Oct. ’17) noted, many techs choose to remove the cab of an ’03-’07 Super Duty to perform head gasket replacement on the 6.0L Power Stroke turbodiesel. Performing the task without removing the cab offers several benefits, including not having to evacuate and then recharge the A/C system and avoiding a fight with corroded cab mounts and cab mount bolts.
Memory LaneI just finished reading your latest edition (Oct. ’17) and I love the old ads in the “From The Back Country” feature. It brought back a ton of old remembers of my first truck, an ’84 Chevy S-10 two-wheel drive. I bought this truck for $4,200 from a dealer in Independence, Louisiana, from the Auto Trader. I could not afford a 4x4 yet.
I made a pre-runner truck from all local shops, with a House of Steel pre-runner bar ($69), Fly-N-Hi springs ($200), Rough Country shocks ($129) and a 3-inch body lift ($200 installed). All this was done on $3.35/hour minimum wage. What a fun time to be a kid in SoCal.

Requiem for Small 4x4sJust read Trail’s End (Oct. ’17) about the lack of small 4x4s. The “small” 4x4s of today are huge and so are their prices. I’ve owned several small 4x4s built in the ’80s and ’90s, including a ’90 Geo Tracker and an ’86 Toyota pickup. Both were great. Rust destroyed ’em (thanks, road salt), but the drivetrains were still willing and able. The small pickup trucks of today are huge. Give us back a small, affordable 4x4 pickup.
My ’85 Ford Ranger 4x4 had the V-6 engine. Even though it had two more cylinders than the base engine it was still underpowered, but overall a fairly good little truck. That is all.
Saw the old ad with the Ram 50 pickup in the October issue. I had forgotten about those trucks! Maybe there’s a reason why. Anyways, I still want one. A quick online search spit out several for sale. Thanks! Oh, and my wife hates you now.
I bought a Chevy S-10 Blazer the first year they came out. The carb on the V-6 was never right and the dealer couldn’t seem to fix it. The engine ended up puking a few years later. But in the end, I formed a bond with the thing. Funny how that works.
The October Trail’s End made me think of the Nissan Hardbody (remember those?) I had in the ’80s. Bought it brand new and drove the wheels off that thing. The paint faded, the engine was unrefined, and the interior was basic. It had virtually no options, but it was an inexpensive, reliable truck.
Really Mini RVThought I would add some pics of a small project I did for my ’01 Ford Explorer Sport two-door. I removed the back seats and built this platform. Using Walmart 35x16x6-inch plastic containers and about $50 worth of lumber, I built the platform you see here with the sliding containers in the rear and a huge storage compartment up front. On top of the platform I have a foam mattress, and I can stretch all the way out with the rear hatch closed and with my two front seats pushed forward. My really mini RV. I was at the Overland Expo West this year in Flagstaff. I went to get ideas for what I could do in the back of my Ford. I ended up building a small table that hooks on my back bumper for $12. All of this can be removed in a matter of minutes. The only tools I used were an electric drill and a handsaw. Everything is glued and screwed. All the wood then got a coating of poly coat.
Adventure for EveryoneI have an idea for a new sponsored four-wheeling adventure. With adventures like Ultimate Adventure and Jp Dirt ’N Drive, what about an adventure open to four-wheeling rigs of all makes, but not as built up like the rigs for the Ultimate Adventure? And not all one make like just Jeeps in Dirt ’N Drive? Call it, “Everyone 4-Wheeling Adventure!”
I love my built CJ-7. But love my FZJ80 too. My diesel 2500 gets me to many places also. They are all great 4x4s, each with their own capacities to do a certain job. I enjoy the coverage you try to do to keep all your readers happy. Of course we all want our favorite 4x4 in your magazine! Keep up the great coverage! Keep all four wheels pulling.
