About Fourwheeler

In 2012, Four Wheeler celebrated its 50th anniversary – a monumental milestone for any publication let alone one dedicated solely to the world of off-road centric 4x4 trucks and SUVs. Four Wheeler has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a 16-page package sent to a mere 250 subscribers to its present standing as the world's leading 4x4 magazine.

Whether you're looking for the scoop on the latest off-road-capable vehicles straight from the factory floor, want to see what others have done to their rides, read up on the latest tech, or keep up with emerging trends from across the off-road world, Four Wheeler will bring it to you.

In addition to in-depth monthly coverage brought to you by an expert group of editors fully engaged in the off-road universe, Four Wheeler also gives out two annual awards – Four Wheeler of the Year and Pickup Truck of the Year.

Four Wheeler of the Year (FWOTY) dates back to 1974, with the initial award going to the Jeep Cherokee. It is awarded to the best new two-speed transfer case-equipped SUV with a production run of at least 1500 vehicles. Contenders are rigorously tested for a week and then judged for their on-trail and pavement performance, empirical data, and interior and exterior quality. Pickup Truck of the Year (PTOTY) started in 1990 (first winner: Mitsubishi Mighty Max) and is identical to FWOTY except that it's awarded to the best pickup truck.

Four Wheeler also hosts a signature event, the annual Top Truck Challenge (TTC). Held at the Hollister Hills SVRA near Hollister Hills, California, TTC takes place over the course of a week and pits 10 vehicles selected by the readers against each other in seven different events -- Tow Test, Frame Twister, Mud Pit, Obstacle Course, Hill Climb, Coal Chute and the infamous Tank Trap.

Enthusiasm for four-wheeling in all its forms is what Four Wheeler has been and continues to be all about -- ever since that first 16-page magazine hit the shelves.
