Pro Comp Xtreme M/T Tires & Series 1089 Wheels - Tech

Ten years ago, we were complaining that, except for Super Swampers, most of the off-road tire offerings had wimpy sidewalls that would seemingly blow out if they got within 3 feet of a sharp rock or stick. One tire company's offerings had such a thin sidewall that you could push your finger in on one side and feel it on the other! Many of you know which tires we're talking about. The upside of this was that big tires seldom weighed more than 60 pounds, keeping unsprung weight down.

Fast-forward to today. There are many more off-road-oriented tires, and they are tough and strong. So tough and strong that some weigh almost double what our old tires did. The toughness is fine, but maybe things have gone too far in the weight department. Some of our trucks have trouble turning these heavy meats. Is there a way for tires to be strong and still be a reasonable weight?

Yes, there's a way because the new Pro Comp Xtreme M/T is a tire that's tough and lighter than many of its competitors. Although the ply rating of a sidewall doesn't really mean that the tire is strong or not (have you ever looked at a semi tire's one-ply sidewall?), these tires' three-ply sidewalls are strong, yet still flexible.

The Pro Comp Xtreme M/T's secret lies in its construction. Pro Comp says, "The Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrain incorporates proven 'Tri-Ply' construction with new 10-degree radial-angle technology which provides two radial polyester body plies and one outer ply angled to 10 degrees. This allows for maximum puncture resistance, but it still has total predictability and flexibility on- or off-road. Combine two layers of opposed-angle steel belting and a seamless layer of spiral nylon overwrap for one of the industry's toughest tires on the road. The extra-thick sidewall treatments resist cuts and abrasions, while the unique shoulder lugs enhance traction on the rocks or in the mud."

Because of a record-breaking heat wave, we didn't have any mud, but we did have dirt and rocks to test these tires. They performed very well in all media. Sand flotation was very good, and the tires allowed the Jeep to power through the loose stuff well. In the rocks, the tread design and compound let us go anywhere we wanted. The sidewall treatment gives protection in rocks too. Any time nylon is used in the construction of a tire, it's a better tire. The Xtreme M/T has a nylon overwrap that increases tire strength. It doesn't cause the famous nylon "thump" in the morning when tires are cold, either. We don't usually expect much when testing a mud tire on the pavement. The Xtreme M/T tires impressed us with their traction and stability on the road. They are a quiet tire at speed and afford very good lateral grip. We'll reserve judgment on whether they work well on icy asphalt. Snow performance should be great, since the tires' sand ability is so good, and we've found that sand and snow performance are related.

The Pro Comp Series 1089 alloy wheels are part of the Pro Comp Alloys Xtreme Rated wheel line that includes polished, chrome, black chrome, and black finished wheels. They're strong, true, good-looking wheels that are a perfect match for the Xtreme M/T tires. With a 2,200-pound load rating and a lifetime structural warranty, there will be no worries about wheel failures. The polished 1089 comes with beadlock styling on the outer rim, but we opted to have OMF Performance put real beadlocks on our wheels. The OMF beadlocks keep tires on the rim no matter how low we go in air pressure.

The Pro Comp Xtreme M/T tires and 1089 wheels with OMF beadlocks are a 21st-century off-road tire-and-wheel combination. Strong and competent, they'll take you anywhere you want to go and inspire confidence in your ride that you maybe never had before. In other words: We like them.
