Crossover steering is also on the menu for the Phoenix Project. Owners of '86-'95 Toyota 4WD pickups have it easy when it comes to the steering box. The '86-'95 box is already in place on the framerail. Owners of '79-'85 models must provide mounts on their framerails to be able to use the '86-'95-model steering box. We decided to tackle the steering-box mount ourselves. As you can see in the lead photo, this part of the Phoenix Project took place in a suburban driveway. Since you can't TIG weld in the wind, we used a welding curtain and sheets of plywood to create a makeshift wind block. After removing the stock '81 push-pull steering box, we set the new box on the framerail to determine the best mounting location. Our '81 frame has already been subjected to a lot of stress. You can see a patch plate to the left of the steering box. This photo does not show the final mounting position.
