A mounting plate for the '79 tie rod was built onto the '73 drag link. Cold-rolled steel plate, 1/4-inch thick, was used here, too. The tie rod has the tie rod ends swaged into it, so they couldn't be removed for welding. Jim McGean at Dynatrac told me about this little trick to keep the tie rod ends alive. The tie rod end was set into a water-filled tin can during welding. The water got hot - boiling hot in fact - but the tie rod end and it's melt-able guts lived through the welding process without damage.
