Pinion preload was measured at this point. Torque needed to keep the pinion in motion was noted. Preload with new bearings should be about 17 to 30 lb-in. This setup becomes an iterative process by adding more shims to reduce preload or removing shims to increase preload. Starting with the original shims usually gets the installer pretty close to final needed value.
