Backlash Measurement

With pinion preload set and a baseline pinion depth set with the original pinion shims, the ARB carrier was installed and the backlash measured with a test indicator. Backlash is the free movement of the ring gear with the pinion gear fixed in place. From this point, shims were moved side-to-side on the carrier to get the backlash within spec, about 0.006 to 0.010 inches. Shimming the ring gear away from the pinion increases backlash, and vice versa.
