Installing a sport cage into your Jeep can provide extra protection when you're rock crawling on the trail. But it can also mean putting up with less legroom near the kick panels and possibly losing the use of your sun visors and AC vents. For Jeep Wrangler JK owners who also use their vehicles as daily transportation and don't want to put up with any inconveniences, a new design from OR-Fab seems like the perfect solution.?>
The OR-Fab sport cage has a unique patent-pending design that tightly hugs the contours of the JK's interior frame. The sides of the 'cage attach to the vehicle's factory pinch weld seams, which are further supported by the company's floor-mount kit to connect the entire area to the Jeep's floor channel reinforcement. This makes for a very solid foundation that doesn't take up valuable legroom.
The sport cage is manufactured in the USA and is made from 1 3/4-inch x 0.120-inch-wall steel tubing. OR-Fab's R&D department recommends installing the floor-mount kit first, which is sold separately, then installing the sport cage, which normally takes from 4 to 6 hours and doesn't require any welding.
Unlike other 'cages that attach to the factory frame support with two-piece collars or clamps, the OR-Fab 'cage actually replaces the OEM windshield frame supports that connect the rear upper crossmember to the windshield frame. Built this way, the vertical members of the 'cage become a single piece that's much stronger than multiple pieces while also eliminating the chance of vibrations from bolts that can come loose over time. The 'cage also utilizes the vehicle's factory padding that requires some minor modifications over the door sections of the cage. OR-Fab provides the center streamer bars in the kit, but if you have a four-door model, you'll have to purchase the rear streamer bars separately.
OR-Fab's JK sport cage retails for about $610 and fits hard- and soft-top models. It's available in a wrinkle-black or bicycle-black finish. We found it to be an extremely solid cage that provides a clean, OEM appearance that can offer additional protection while crawling, yet blends into the vehicle so it won't be a hindrance with your daily commute.
