Spectre Performance Cold Air Intake Kit - A Breath Of Fresh AirPosted in How To on March 1, 2011 Comment (0)
While many air-intake systems are available for the popular 4.0L-equipped Jeep Wrangler, none offers the unique design of the Spectre Performance intake system. The Spectre kit offers an inline-mounted cone-type filter within an aluminum intake tube that draws fresh air from the cowl. This means your engine isn't breathing hot air from under the hood. The intake tube attaches to the firewall on a duct mount and air is drawn through a 3-inch-diameter hole that leads to the cowl area.
Spectre Performance's in-house dyno testing shows improvements in both horsepower and torque ratings, and a significant seat-of-your-pants improvement is obvious. The system is offered for '97-to-'06 Jeep Wrangler TJ models and a similar intake kit is offered for '87-to-'90 Jeep Cherokee models. With the exception of the kits offered for '04-to-'06 model TJs, the Spectre systems are CARB exempt and 50-state legal. Spectre Performance also offers a kit for '97-to-'02 Jeep Wranglers with the 2.5L engine; this kit uses a Spectre cone filter and intake tube that remain in the factory location.
We stopped by the Spectre Performance tech center in Ontario, California, to carry out an installation of the intake system on a 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ. The install was quick and easy, requiring only hand tools and a drill and hole saw. Once it was in place, we took a test drive and were impressed. The afore-mentioned seat-of-your-pants improvement is great. Check out the photos for the play-by-play.
