We’ve had our 33x12.50R17 Interco Vortracs on our 2WD F-150 for a few months now and have been pleased with their performance over that brief period. When we saw they were Load Range E, we thought these would be stiff-riding tires under our half-ton truck. However, they feel good on the highway. They’re certainly firmer in construction than the stock-ish tires they replaced, but they handle well and don’t make much noise for the fairly aggressive all-terrain that they are.
The tread is a wide, flat profile and the square shoulders bite well on loose terrain. While the tire may bit a bit aggressive for soft sand, airing down helps. We like the sturdy construction of the side biters and the tires offer good traction over rocky surfaces.
We’re used to seeing Interco building gnarly trail tires. Their all-terrain offering in the Vortrac may hit the mark for drivers looking for a wide tread tire that can play mildly in the dirt and offer a quality road ride.
Simply, it’s a special bolt with a special socket that fits it. We used it in place of one of the four bolts that thread into the winch feet. We installed the Factor 55 Winch Lock on our winch a few months ago, and still have the winch…not that it would necessarily have been stolen if it wasn’t “locked,” but winches are a high-theft item. The Winch Lock is good peace of mind for us and a further deterrent to would-be thieves.
Liquid Metal Gatlin Wheels
In July of 2010, we built a solid-axle ’88-to-’98 1-ton Tahoe. We outfitted it with some Liquid Metal Gatlin wheels with a chrome finish. They weren’t some forged aluminum racing wheels, but they were on par with most cast-aluminum wheels made today. They’re rolling perfectly, as should be expected, and are still holding air just fine. The finish is what we were surprised about and impressed with. We find that a lot of chrome finishes these days just flake off too easily when presented with off-road elements. But these Gatlin wheels that we got from Discount Tire Direct have not shown any signs of wear or chrome flaking. Every time we clean them with a sponge and water to like-new condition, we thank our lucky stars that we chose this wheel in chrome instead of polished aluminum.
