We don't know if Michael McCormick is a roofer around Avalon, California (a town on the island of Catalina, just off the California coast), but his 'Trick comes from the rooftop. Mike didn't want to pay big bucks for undercoating on his CJ-5, so he mixed just enough paint thinner with black roof-patching mastic to make a brushable paste. He applied the paste to his fenderwells and claims it went on easily, looks great and has lasted a long time. He doesn't say what a "long time" is, but the pics he sent of his Jeep show its underside looking pretty good. Thanks for slathering us with this one, Mike.
Lighting The Way
We've seen those small, $8.79 rubber housing tractor/utility lights on rigs before. They are usually used for rock lights or back-up lights, since the sealed beam they come with doesn't throw much light. Earl George of Napoleon, Ohio has found a cure for that problem, one which turns these cheap, but durable, little lights into decent off-road driving lights. Earl buys his lights at NAPA under part number 50-620W-3. He also picks up NAPA's 13-volt, 100-watt, aircraft spotlight sealed beams, part number 4509. He replaces the wimpy stan-dard sealed beams with the 100-watt jobs, and the original 16-gauge wire with 12-gauge, and instantly has durable, rust- and vibration-free driving lights for around 20 bucks each.
