About six years ago, we swapped a Dana 60 into the front of our K5 Blazer project. The Dynatrac-built Dana 60 was opted with heavy-duty CTM U-joints that we recently pulled apart when we swapped stub hubs onto our axle. While they did need to be re-greased, they were still in good condition. That is pretty impressive, considering what we know this front axle's been through.
We have not had to yet, but we're told that as long as the caps and cross are intact, we can rebuild these CTM U-joints with new bushings, seals, and clips.
They're more than double the cost of a standard U-joint, but that is an easily acceptable price after six years of use (and who knows how many more?).
Alpine Head Units
We've been through a number of stereo head units, and if there's one thing we can say for Alpine stereos, it's that they hold up against dirt! We've used other stereo brands, but our luck has not been stellar with the amount of grime we pack into them during our off-road trips.
Our Alpine head units have consistently held up and we haven't had to replace one yet, though we did have to lubricate and clean out a gear-driven faceplate mechanism on one that had sand in it.
Street-Legal Water Injection
A while back we added an AEM water injection kit onto our 2003 6.0L Super Duty.
Injecting water into an engine does cool down things and lower exhaust gas temperatures, but it does very little for any additional power. Adding a methanol/water mix does increase power (as well as lower exhaust temperatures), but it is not legal for street use.
That being said, water/meth injection systems and water injection kits are basically the same and use the same parts, save for the nozzles.
Since our street-legal AEM kit does not engage until after 15 pounds of boost, one tank of distilled water lasts through three or four tanks of fuel when driving the truck unloaded. When towing a heavy trailer for long distances, we found ourselves filling up the tank of distilled water about once per diesel tank fill-up.
