Deep snow is a tire's nemesis. The large tread voids on the most aggressive mud tires quickly fill up with snow, forcing it to lose traction. Snow chains work well in these conditions by digging through the snow and gripping onto the hard trail surface below. Keep in mind that the chains don't work well on icy rock and should never be used with the tires aired down.
