Both tube diameter and wall thickness should be chosen carefully. One example that illustrates this point is the construction of many late model truck driveshafts. Many of these are built from large diameter, thin wall tubing. These driveshafts are quite strong and can easily handle the torsional load output by the engine. However, they have poor resistance to trail damage due to the thin wall thickness. If your off-road use finds you coming in contact with large rocks, you probably want to opt for a smaller diameter, thicker wall driveshaft tube.
