We pulled back the hood of this '90 Formula Trans Am to find a 5.7L TPI setup staring us in the face. Tuned to make mounds of mid-range torque, these engines churned 245hp and 345lb-ft. However, with their TH700R4 transmissions and 3.23 rear axles they did so while delivering mileage in the mid-20s on the freeway. The 5.0L TPI engines are a more-common find, so move the distributor wiring so that you can see the top of the bellhousing area on the block. You'll see a 5.0L or 5.7L cast into the top of the block.
