We had planned on making a fuel tank out of 1⁄4-inch-thick material, so we loaded our spool gun with 0.035-inch ER4043 wire. It’s a good, general purpose wire that works on various grades of aluminum. You adjust wire tension inside the gun just like you would normally adjust the steel wire inside your MIG machine. Run the wire out against a non-conductive material like a block of wood until it exits the nozzle smoothly and evenly.
