This isn't a tranquil coral reef in Australia, but a photomicrograph (550x magnification) of a fresh lead-sponge battery plate, fully capable of storing and generating electricity. Unfortunately, this amorphous lead sulfate is about to convert into a crystalline form, just from regular use, which seriously degrades the battery's performance.
