Installing a winch is pretty easy—or at least it looks that way. Nearly all winches for 4x4s attach to the vehicle with four 3/8-inch bolts. Square nuts are slipped into the mounting feet of the winch, then the bolts slide up from under the mount. This can provide a bit of entertainment and frustration, depending on how easy the access to the underside of the mount is. A piece of tape is useful in keeping the nuts in the winch feet while you hoist the winch into place; winches can weigh in excess of 100 pounds, so having an extra set of hands to help is a good idea.
