This is a detail of a typical replacement bulb for a composite headlight system. The part of the filament that looks like a spring is what glows when the light is turned on. The glass chamber can be filled with halogen or xenon gas, which changes the characteristic of the glow for a brighter and whiter light. It also extends the life of the electrode.
