Turn Left, Smoke Right
Old Jeeps had a solid steel steering column that either went through the dash and floor or through the dash and firewall. That made running wires near the column easy, because there were no moving parts between the dash and the firewall. Jeeps today have collapsible columns so the driver doesn’t get impaled on a frontal impact. The exposed shaft and joint take additional consideration when running wires. You can’t just zip-tie the wires to the column all helter-skelter. And, after one incident where we turned left and then spun the wheel right only to smell burnt electrical, we don’t attach any wires to the column. Not even the aluminum channel. Instead, it’s a better idea to attach new wires to either the existing wire loom, or to the sheetmetal above the steering column.
