Illuminate Your Winch Spool At Night With LED Strip LightsPosted in How To: Electrical on June 9, 2016
There are ways to add auxiliary lighting to your vehicle in a number of locations. Editor Brubaker tasked us with finding one method of illuminating a winch spool for nighttime recovery tasks.
We thought of various means to accomplish this and finally settled on using a waterproof Lerway LED rigid strip lightbar, but we cut it down to better match the width of our winch spool. The solution was compact, inexpensive, and cast plenty of bright light on our spool line.
We can imagine these strips used for other locations where you desire a longer illumination path than a single bulb can provide. These could be used for in-bed cargo lighting or for trailer interior lighting, with their low current draw and ample bright light.
We found that we could easily cut one of the Lerway 20-inch aluminum strips to shorten it to a size that worked in our location. For our winch, we created a 10-inch long strip.
The strip lights are made from a number of 2-inch strips soldered end to end. We simply cut a 20-inch strip down to size by cutting where two sections met.
In our case, we found a good spot to mount the LED strip to illuminate our winch. We installed it on the bottom edge of the plastic grille that hovers just above our winch spool. More or less of a strip could be used, depending on how much length you want to light up.
