Overfilling the gas tank and vibration can both kill the charcoal canister. There is a purge valve inside it that if it gets stuck open will throw these “EVAP” codes. If you top off your tank, raw fuel could work its way from the filler neck down into the charcoal canister. Fuel breaks down the charcoal and it can then get stuck in the purge valve. Also, vibration can break down the charcoal pellets with the same result on the valve. If you lightly shake it and it rattles, you may have broken pellets. The old fuel smell trick isn’t a great one because even one overfill can leave it smelling like gas forever. If fuel pours out, that’s a problem.
