This cutaway of a Bilstein 5100 shock shows the typical monotube construction. Nitrogen fills the chamber below the floating piston while hydraulic oil fills the upper portion that the rod and oil piston travel through. Shims on the oil piston restrict flow around the piston, adding resistance to movement, making the shock stiffer.
