I am currently building a 70-series Land Cruiser using a T100 frame. In an attempt to keep it low slung I am considering welding the cab to the frame. I realize there will be more vibration, but are there any more cons to my idea? I have a lot of bodywork to do anyway due to rust. Let’s just say the truck will be used mostly as an off-roader. Also, I got the idea from some doomsday crazies I saw on YouTube!
Aside from absorbing vibration, body mounts also soak up the inevitable flex between the body and the frame. If you weld the body straight to the frame, then you will likely end up with warped body panels and torn sheetmetal in the long run. There is also the safety factor. The body is engineered to take loads at the frame attachment points and as such is reinforced in those areas. This becomes less of an issue if your build includes a substantial rollcage structure, because a rollcage stiffens up a frame and makes it much more rigid. Keep in mind that since you are using a dissimilar body and frame, you should be able to put the body mounts anywhere you want on the frame. If necessary, you can always channel the body so that it sits lower on the frame and still make the body mounts work.
