Once the carrier is installed, recheck the backlash. Ideally, it should be within a thousandth or two of the original reading-at least within the spec for the axle. If backlash is out of spec, it usually means you may have mixed up the shims. A good reading indicates the gear pattern will remain where it was set previously (right or wrong). After the install, you should not have any new noise.
