This diagram illustrates how power is transmitted through a 4x4 drivetrain. Starting with a given engine output torque, we can see how torque progressively increases as it is transferred through gear reductions with the total equal to our final drive ratio. It’s easy to see from the formula that a numerically high axle ratio can transmit more torque (stress) to the axleshafts. If we were to double the transfer case ratio, the pinion gear would see twice the torque load. By working through the numbers, you can understand the speed and torque available from your drivetrain, and the strength consequences of your choices.
