Even with a super-rigid 10-ply carcass, as is found on this 255/85R16 Toyo Open Country MT, a tire can provide excellent flotation in the sand-as long as the vehicle is heavy enough to overcome the stiffness of the sidewalls. This photo was taken with the tire pressure at 7 psi. Notice how large the tire's footprint is. Contrary to popular belief, the added weight of the diesel engine in this F-350 actually helped contribute to flotation with this particular setup. Notice how the aesthetic elements of the sidewall assist in the sand. What many might consider decorative lugs actually provide additional bite when the tire is aired down.
