The Jeep Commando was a midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was produced from 2006 to 2010. The Commander was designed and built to offer a very spacious SUV that was fully off-road capable while still offering many of the comforts associated with an everyday vehicle. The Jeep Commander is the fourth vehicle produced to use the "Commander" name despite lacking any mutual specifications or functions. The Jeep Commander is most similar to the Mahindra Commander which was an Indian-made SUV.
It was first introduced at the New York Auto Show in 2005 and sold as a three-row, seven-passenger alternative to the Jeep Cherokee, making it the most spacious SUV Jeep every produced. Jeep created the Commander in response to the ever increasing market for a larger SUV that includes a quality fuel economy description.
The inspiration for the Jeep Commander was the original Jeep Wagoneer. The Jeep brand lost the large and spacious SUV option when the Wagoneer was discontinued and there was a market for a roomy SUV that Jeep felt it could fulfill. The Wagoneer was the Commander's inspiration however the chassis and design was based on the WK Grand Cherokee and was modeled after the third generation Jeep Cherokee XJ and second generation KK Jeep Liberty.
Jeep is a company known for its popular and luxurious SUV vehicles. The Jeep Cherokee is a very popular SUV today and Jeep has been offering many types of SUV's for many decades now. The Jeep Commander was marketed as a great alternative to the Jeep Cherokee; one that offered similar off-road capabilities but much more passenger and storage room. Jeep produced the Commander to fulfill the needs of the large, active family that spent the weekends out of the house camping, hiking, playing sports, and living an active life. The Commander came equipped with the storage and towing capacity to haul boats and store many large items while still comfortably sitting a family of five. There were some negatives that did emerge upon the release of the Commander. The third-row seating was notorious for lacking adequate room to fit the last two passengers and the larger engine option significantly decreased fuel economy.
The Limited trim model featured upgraded luxury options such as heated leather seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable pedals, a power tailgate, satellite radio, and a power sunroof with twin skylights in the second row. The Limited also comes with an option navigation system and rear-seat DVD player upgrade. The Limited came equipped with a large 4.7-liter, PowerTech V-8 that produced 265 horsepower (hp) and 330 lb-ft of torque and a five-speed automatic transmission. The Commander came equipped with the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive system with offered two sophisticated options. The transfer case featured two settings called the Hill Start and Descent Assist which helped control the Commander during various speeds and grades during off-road driving. The Commander offered a great deal of storage capacity too, nearly 7.5 cubic feet when all three rows were used, 36.4 cubic feet when the third row was stowed away and 68.9 cubic feet when all rear seats were folded down.
The current Jeep Commander was offered in two trims, the Sport and the Limited. The sport comes equipped with standard features such as power accessories, power driver seat, air conditioning, CD player, cloth seats, keyless entry and alloy wheels. The Sport engine was a 3.7-liter PowerTech V-6 that produced 210hp at 5200 revolutions per minute (rpm) with 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. The Limited had many more luxury features such as heated leather seats, a power sunroof, twin skylights and more. The engine was a 4.7-liter PowerTech V-8 that produced 265hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The last option was the Overland which was powered by a much larger engine, a 5.7-liter PowerTech V-8 capable of producing 357 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque. This model featured the signature "HEMI" logo and had additional luxury features like a GPS navigation system, SIRIUS satellite radio, and leather and suede seats. All models used the five-speed automatic transmission, had a wheel base of 109.5 inches, total length of 188.5 inches, width and height of 75 inches and 71.9 inches, and curb weight of nearly 4400 pounds.
