Managing increased horsepower and torque
As soon as Ford teased that it would be announcing changes to its 2015 Ford Super Duty at the State Fair of Texas, we figured the Blue Oval would show something substantial in an effort to keep it right at the top of heavy duty truck heap. Now it's official and we know what Ford has in store for its 2015 F450 -- namely that the 2015 Ford Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke is being upgraded as part of an overall update to its Super Duty lineup.
We initially read of “engineering improvements [that] boost the performance, capability and durability” of Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine. The biggest detail surrounding this ambiguity is that the second-generation Scorpion 6.7L Power Stroke will receive a larger Garrett GT37 turbocharger, which will replace the Garrett GT32 single sequential turbo (SST), a variable geometry unit which featured twin compressor wheels mounted on a single turbine shaft. The GT37 features a single, larger 88-millimeter (ind/exd: 63.5mm/88mm) compressor wheel with a 72.5mm turbine size, larger than the 64mm of the GT32.
With more airflow resulting in more power, we expect the Ford Super Duty’s existing 400 horsepower and 800 lb./ft. of torque will be getting a bump upward. Comments Power Stroke technical specialist David Ives, “The original designers of the current Power Stroke V8 diesel forecasted needs for higher output. This facilitated the larger turbocharger, increasing airflow and creating more power.” More power necessitates fuel system improvements. A new high-pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors, along with all-new injector tips, and a new exhaust temperature sensor, can be expected.
Increased horsepower and torque necessitates a handful of enhancements for the Ford Power Stroke, including:
- A new torque converter for the 6R140 TorqShift six-speed transmission
- Improved crankshaft fillet design; increased crankshaft damper weigh
- New five-layer head gasket; added material to cylinder heads, exhaust manifold and valvetrain
- Redesigned turbo oil and cooling lines; piston assembly upgrades
- Four-layer exhaust manifold gasket.
2015 Ford F-450
The 2015 Ford F-450 will host a variety of upgrades to bolster performance and improved towing capability, including a strengthened frame, new commercial-grade 19.5-inch wheels and tires, upgraded rear driveline U-joints, new rear leaf springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and shocks, stronger steering gears and steering linkages, larger brakes, and Power Stroke calibration specific to the F-450.
The 2015 Ford Super Duty lineup also features an update to the King Ranch edition. The Ford guys went back down to Texas for a refresher course on what the King Ranch is all about and came back with the idea to feature the ranch's signature 'Running W' brand, which now adorns the seatbacks and the center console with branding, that looks, well, branded. Leather seating options have also been updated. Outside, a new Caribou paint is sprayed on various trim pieces, and the Running W is also featured on the wheel caps.
