Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept Unveiled at Los Angeles Auto Show

Chevy has just introduced their new Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show and it’s definitely turning some heads in the truck world. One look at this truck and you’ll be convinced that it’s an actual off-road beast chock full of off-road performance parts and accessories. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept even features real deal King remote reservoir shocks, all new lower control arms that are 2-inch wider per side which give it an aggressive stance as well as a 4-inch wider track width to give it more stability while wheeling in various types of terrain.

Chevy claims this is a vision of how they could take the all-new midsize truck’s off-road capability to the next level. What really caught our eye is that this Colorado ZR2 Concept also features the new 2.8L Duramax diesel engine that will arrive in the Colorado lineup later next year and is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.8L Duramax diesel is part of a new, global family of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines designed to deliver more-efficient capability. It features a variable-geometry turbocharger for optimal power and efficiency across the rpm band and a balance shaft for greater smoothness. The 2.8L Duramax diesel should pack plenty of power for midsize truck buyers with an estimated 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. That’s quite a bit of torque at relatively low rpm so this truck should have no problems navigating tough steep trails or pulling trailer duties should you want to haul some off-road toys.

You’ll notice the front and rear fascias are different from the 2015 Chevy Colorado Z71. The fascias were designed to increase approach and departure angles to better navigate trails and off-road obstacles when driving off road. A 2-inch lift kit is also added which gives the Colorado ZR2 Concept 30.7 degrees of approach angle as well as 22.7 degrees of departure angle. This is significantly more than the 2015 Chevy Colorado Z71 which features approach and departure angles of 25 and 21 degrees respectively. The new facias also feature integrated flip-out aluminum tow hooks as well as a front winch.

The Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept gets much of its off-road prowess from King coil-over remote reservoir shocks which help soak up the bumps off-road while allowing it to flex over rocky trails. Since this concept is designed to tackle anything mother nature can throw at it, a set of electronic-locking front and rear differentials are part of the recipe and deliver power to a set of custom 18-inch aluminum multi-spoke, bead-lock-style wheels. A set of custom wheel flares cover the larger off-road tires and increased track width, enhancing the truck’s purposeful stance. You’ll also be happy to know that the Colorado ZR2 Concept features custom rocker guards for those that like to hit rock gardens with a little enthusiasm.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Colorado ZR2 Concept features a matching full-size spare wheel/tire assembly that is secured in the bed with a quick-release handle. The bed also features the protective spray-in bed liner available with production Colorado models, GearOn accessories and a 48-inch Hi-Lift jack which is a must if you’re going out wheeling far away from civilization.

Exterior touches on the Colorado ZR2 Concept include an all-new grille and headlamp housings with blacked-out accents as well as the power dome-style hood. Chevy says the concept features a Cyprus Green exterior color with Henna Orange accents and custom ZR2 identification on the rear fenders, tailgate and grille. We think the Colorado ZR2 Concept’s paint color resembles a glossy olive drab green.

Inside, the concept off-roader features the same blend of capability and comfort found in the production Colorado Z71, with ZR2 logos embroidered on the front-seat headrests and embossed in the custom Chevrolet Accessories-based floor liners. The ZR2 logo is featured on the instrument cluster display, as well as a custom inclinometer that shows degree of incline from front to back, and side to side, you know, in case off-camber teetering predicaments aren’t enough of a pucker factor clue.

Additional electronic accessories have been added to the center stack to make the Colorado ZR2 a true off-road warrior. Incorporated into the piano key bank is AUX toggle and four additional toggles: two for winch in and winch out operation; and two for the electronic front- and rear-locking differentials. The Jet Black leather-trimmed interior features orange stitching that complements the exterior’s orange accents.

While this Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept is not yet a production vehicle, we have high hopes that this one might just become a reality and if it does, you can rest assured knowing that we’ll be the first in line to flog one in the dirt and give you real world feedback on this awesome rig’s capabilities.
