July 2012 Dispatch Jeep News & Rumors

The ’12 Wrangler made the Kelley Blue Book ’12 Total Cost Ownership Awards. It’s based on purchase price, depreciation, financing, insurance, state fees, swimsuit competition, and assumed costs of fuel, maintenance, and repairs. It left the Toyota Land Cruiser in the dust when it came to insurance, maintenance, and fuel costs. The “five-year total cost” was revealed as $41,764.

Doing something inexpensive.

Not to be outdone, insure.com ranked the least expensive vehicles to insure. Wrangler Unlimited Sport, Compass, and Patriot, come on down, you cheap bastages.

Will the not-Liberty new Liberty get a new Pentastar V-6, like a 3.2L?

Eight-speed transmission (845RE) as standard equipment for the Grand starting in 2013? Nine-speed for the not-Liberty new Liberty in 2014?

Eight, then comes nine.

Jeeps being built in Russia? Da.

You like drivesrt.com for all things related to SRT? Well, it just got like-ier. You get to go inside the engineering labs, design studios, and factory. Other stuff, too, but we didn’t explore much beyond the voyeur factor.

The Ozark school district in Missouri is moving some of its programs and classes (like auto body) to the vacant Heritage Jeep property.

More school: Jeep and Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. What do they have in common besides a J? They’re developing a mentoring program and are offering field trips to the Jeep Design Studio and Jefferson North Assembly Plant, among the ways to get the Detroit high school students stoked about autos. Or maybe about Jeeps. Or maybe about field trips and not being at school.

Future Jeepers. And Jp-ers.

Industry News
Can you name all the locations of Mopar parts distribution centers in the world? Go ahead, we can wait…you nailed it! Or you did if you named more than 50, including the new ones in Argentina and Brazil.

Wasn’t this also the end of the first Indiana Jones movie?

Go to summitracing.com. It now has same-day shipping for orders, including those placed as late as 10 p.m. EST. You know, the time zone three hours ahead of everyone.

Go to rustysoffroad.com. It’s all-new.

Go to holley.com. It’s giving away a carb a week. Join the mailing list.

Everything is there…except actual rusty things.

Go to volantstories.com. It’s a place that’s interested in hearing your story about your Volant system.

Go to the Apple App Store. It’s got the Nitto Tire Race Results app that includes race results for off-road racing, like SCORE.

Go to the Apple App Store. It’s got the Diesel Power Fuel Finder. If you love diesel fuel but hate the mystery of finding it, problem solved.

Got diesel? (You will now.)

WD-40 has ventured into a brave new world: the Specialist line. Rust Release Penetrant Spray and Rust Remover Soak are among the products. Hey, is that good news for the recall of ’04 to ’05 Libertys for rust issues with the rear control arms?

“We’ve all produced dogs.”
—Director Clyde Campbell of Jeep Australia, according to International Business Times, while discussing the fact that 2011 was Chrysler’s best year in Australia and in response to questions about Jeep’s poor-quality reputation.

Transformers 4? How you doin’?

Are we going to be forced to drive a vehicle with a rearview camera as standard equipment? The government, specifically the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is pushing for a mandate for 2014.

That jack is a terrible driver.

London auto insurance rates are through the roof due to whiplash claims. The UK has earned the nickname “whiplash capital of Europe,” and there’s more for the lexicon: “compensation culture.”

DMEautomotive, which conducts, and we quote, “science-inspired, results-based” automotive marketing, did a study about the dealership customer base and, we quote again, “roughly half of aftermarket chains loyalists are under 34, while around half of dealer loyalists are 50+” and “dealership loyalists from the over-70 segment exiting market would represent a $3.4 billion loss.” Everyone stop aging, will ya?

As we went to press, the Transition Roadable Aircraft from Terrafugia was set to have its worldwide auto show debut. It’s a street-legal airplane.

We’re one step closer to monkeys flying out of our backsides.

There’s a handy dandy way to compare vehicle reviews: totalcarscore.com. The site takes quantitative vehicle reviews from top industry sources and does some kind of voodoo math to give vehicles a comprehensive score reflecting overall worthiness to be alive.

This Month’s Edition of “We Don’t Know How This Announcement Ends”

“With gas prices topping four dollars, 400,000 young Americans indicate ‘Gas prices are too damn high.’”

(Hi, kids, your ol’ pal Jp here. Welcome to reality. Enjoy your stay.)

Ram Trucks
A factory-built compressed natural gas-powered (CNG) Ram 2500 will now be available to both fleet and commercial customers. The bi-fuel truck will have a 5.7L Hemi. CNG makes for an estimated range of 255 miles; the gasoline extends to 367 total miles. Also, the Ram Tradesman model has extended to the Crew Cab and Quad Cab varieties. It’s a value-friendly package, with the 4.7L, a standard tow package, a spray-in bedliner, and a RamBox cargo management system.

Bought by people who enjoy trading cards. We think.
