Ford Adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay for 2017 Models

With today’s tech-savvy consumers, the answer to “What do you want, A, B, or C?” is often “All of the above.” In an effort to offer technology integration that has something for everyone, Ford is adding Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration to its 2017 models, while simultaneously developing and pursuing its own SmartDeviceLink open-source mobile app platform in partnership with industry behemoth Toyota. Finally, after being beaten to the punch by a surprisingly aggressive initiative by General Motors, Ford will begin offering embedded 4G LTE data as part of its suite of connectivity and integration services as Sync Connect.

Among the features of Sync Connect are remote start, fuel level, and vehicle location. As part of the growing number of AppLink compatible programs, AAA roadside services, Glympse location sharing, Concur expense report tracking, and Eventseeker location-based event information will be among the offerings.

Unlike GM, which only offers a 90-day trial period for its OnStar 4G LTE package, Ford is offering its 4G service for the first five years of ownership. The specific details of the freebie service have not yet been announced. Chances are the complimentary service will be 200 MB or 1 GB per month, with larger data plans available for an upcharge. Like OnStar 4G LTE, AT&T will be the provider for the embedded mobile broadband service. Among the first models to receive this bundle of tech features is the redesigned 2017 Ford Escape compact SUV.
