Marchionne Hints at Non-Grand Jeep Wagoneer Model

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne has earned the reputation for making off-script comments about possible future products, sending reporters and internal PR staff scrambling in a delicate thrust-and-perry of official denials and non-descript statements while the blogosphere catches fire. The latest item to arouse the interest of industry watchers is Marchionne’s conjecture about a potential place for the Jeep Wagoneer in the brand’s lineup. And we’re not talking about the Grand Wagoneer, which has been planned and discussed for several years. The specific quote, cited by Automotive News’ Larry Vellequette, was, “I think it’s important for us to have found a home for the Grand Wagoneer family -- both the Grand Wagoneer and the Wagoneer -- in whatever shape they come, and that we find that space without creating additional production capacity.”

Whether the differentiation between a Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer would be simply trim and equipment or a difference in physical size is unknown. Marchionne has previously said he sees room in the Ram lineup for a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV. The Grand Wagoneer was previously believed to be based on a long-wheelbase Grand Cherokee unibody chassis. However, the Wagoneer family could potentially be an entirely different animal, being more along the lines of the body-on-frame Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.
