2017 Ford Super Duty Packs Seven Cameras, 2 Patents Pending

Hot on the heels of Chevrolet’s announcement of the Trailering Camera System for the Silverado, Ford reveals more details of its towing visibility system for the 2017 Super Duty. Altogether, the system employs seven cameras, three of which are utilized specifically for reversing. Compared to 1/2-ton truck buyers, Ford acknowledges Super Duty buyers are more experienced in towing and hauling. Consequently, the system on the Super Duty is more hands-on than the Pro Trailer Backup assist on the F-150, which takes over steering function and replaces it with a knob interface on the console.

On the 2017 Super Duty, the Trailer Reverse Guidance system doesn’t take over steering, but it does offer guidance and alerts to potential jackknife hazards. The two mirror-mounted cameras monitor trailer angle, and the tailgate-mounted and cab roof-mounted cameras help the driver maintain a straight centerline when lining up the hitch to the trailer for either conventional hitches or gooseneck/fifth-wheel hitches.

The system also features a remote customer-placed camera that can be mounted to the rear of a box trailer for visibility behind the trailer. Ford says it has two pending patents on the system. In addition to the rear-facing cameras, the 2017 Super Duty also offers an available grille-mounted front-view camera, which is used for the lane departure warning system, as well as the 360-degree “bird’s eye” camera system.
