Jeep Wrangler Recalled for Steering Wheel Clockspring

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling 392,464 Jeep Wranglers from the 2007-2010 model years to fix the clockspring wiring connector in the steering column. Excessive exposure to dust and dirt, which is not uncommon with Wranglers, could cause premature wear of the clockspring, compromising its functionality, and in a worse-case scenario, prevent the driver side airbag from deploying. The telltale sign something may be at fault is if the airbag warning light stays illuminated. Customers that have a persistent airbag warning light are advised to contact their dealer as soon as possible.

Special-service right-hand-drive JK Wrangler models (rural postal service) from the 2011-2016 model years are also affected. In addition to the number of units affected in the U.S., another 35,412 vehicles in Canada, 8,529 in Mexico, and 62,580 outside of the NAFTA region are also potentially affected. The fix consists of an installation of a new steering wheel back cover and steering-column shroud, as well as a new clockspring, if necessary.

The clockspring wiring harness plays an increasingly important part in modern cars, as all functions on the steering wheel (from the airbag, horn, auxiliary audio controls, handsfree calling, and cruise control) are routed through the ribbon-like harness. You can also visit to check and see if your vehicle is affected by entering the 17-digit vehicle identification number.
