UPDATED! More Photos - Toyota Signs Legendary Racer B.J. BaldwinPosted in News on May 6, 2016
Toyota announced today that they would be returning to the world of desert racing with a multi-year sponsorship agreement with two-time Baja 1000 champion and #Recoil viral-video star B.J. Baldwin. Baldwin will campaign the newly bodied Tundra TRD Pro Trophy Truck in both the Best In The Desert (BITD) and SCORE International off-road racing series.
“Joining the Toyota Racing family in an all-new Tundra is really an honor,” said Baldwin. “As a kid I’d watch Toyota trucks dominate the field with one of my all-time heroes, Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart, behind the wheel. I’m looking forward to continuing the winning tradition and returning Toyota to the top of the winner’s circle!”
Like Toyota and Ivan, B.J. isn’t new to competing at the top levels in desert racing. During the course of two decades, Baldwin has racked up numerous high-profile wins. These include five U.S. national off-road racing titles, three SCORE International championships, one Baja 500 and two Baja 1000 First Place finishes, and a class championship in the famed Dakar Rally.
“BJ’s successful racing record, his adventurous attitude, and his ceaseless dedication to honing himself and his craft speaks volumes to Toyota’s core ‘Let’s Go Places’ and kaizen philosophies,” said Cooper Ericksen, Toyota vice president, vehicle marketing and communications. “We look forward to having BJ and his Tundra involved in this next chapter of Toyota’s desert racing story that so far includes 11 Baja 500 and two Baja 1000 wins.”
Toyota’s current success in off-road racing includes multiple championship wins in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS), The Off-Road Championship (TORC) series, and dominated short-course stadium racing series’ of old. All total, Toyota-backed drivers have amassed 27 driver’s championships, 19 manufacturer’s championships, 11 Baja 500 victories, and 2 Baja 1000 wins.
Look for B.J. Baldwin and the new Tundra TRD Pro Trophy Truck to begin competing this summer.
