BJ Baldwin Takes an LS Powered Ferret Scout Vehicle For a Rip - Video

BJ Baldwin, known for piloting trophy trucks more than 130 mph across brutal desert terrain, just took Toyo Tires latest badass off-road machine for a drive through some rough terrain. The machine in question is a 1959 Ferret armored scout vehicle that has long since retired from military service and found a new lease on life thanks to the Toyo Tires crew and the team at Action Vehicle Engineering (AVE).

Starting with an original Ferret, the AVE team replaced the stock motor with a fantastic sounding LS V-8 engine to turn the six 39-inch Toyo Open Country M/T tires, with the middle two being hydraulically actuated when the terrain gets gnarly. The suspension was upgraded so BJ could let if fly, and a long-travel style suspension with King coilovers was installed providing enough compression and rebound to soak up the uneven terrain with ease.

The coolest part of this Ferret is the turret-turned-grappling-hook-launcher that uses a winch to help pull the rig up terrain that’s too steep or loose for the big ol’ M/Ts to do it alone. Although not entirely plausible we sure would love to see something like in real life, no matter how ridiculous it may be.

Check out BJ hammering down on the skinny pedal as he blasts his way through the dirt in style in the video below. We don’t think he’ll be racing this in the Baja 1000, but it sure would look pretty darn cool.
