Near-Stock 2WD Toyota RAV4 Finishes Second in Lake Superior RallyPosted in News on October 19, 2016 0) (
The Toyota RAV4 dominates the SUV sales charts, and is beloved by suburban moms and commuters across the country for its quiet competence, practicality, and reliability. But who knew the mild-mannered crossover could also be a highly capable race car? That’s just what Ryan Millen and Christina Fate discovered at this past weekend’s Lake Superior Performance Rally in Michigan. The nearly stock RAV4, which only had the necessary safety modifications to make it race-worthy competed in the race with a stock engine and transmission against highly modified, purpose-built entries in the 2WD Class, came in second in its class.
Cold temperatures and wet conditions made the rally a challenge, and going into Stage 6, the RAV4 went off-course and hit a tree. Confident of their second-place ranking, Ryan and Christina opted not to continue. A post-race inspection of the vehicle revealed significant damage. Despite the mishap, the team was happy with the result and impressed with the stellar performance of the RAV4. The Rally America season has ended, but the team will enter the NASA Rally Sport National Championship at the Empire State Performance Rally in New York.
