Video: The Making of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Temporary Proving Grounds

Aside from the new Ford F-150 Raptor, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is one of the most highly anticipated new off-road trucks to come along in quite some time. Employing suspension technology with its origins in Formula One racing, the ZR2 promises to be a formidable and capable contender in the class. The challenge in demonstrating this capability within the tight confines of an urban environment fell upon the event planners at Chevrolet. Obviously, the full spectrum of the truck’s capabilities can’t be fully explored on a small demonstration course. However, that didn’t stop Chevrolet from packing in as much varied terrain as possible into a small space.

We went behind the scenes to witness the making of the ZR2 “off road” circuit at a location near downtown Los Angeles, close to the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Among the highlights of the course are some simulated moguls to showcase the shock and suspension articulation, a steep staggered-traction ramp to showcase the truck’s front and rear locking differentials, and another ramp designed to allow the frontend to catch a little “air” to show the compliance of the three-stage Multimatic shocks. Although no substitute for getting the truck out in the wild and wailing on it in the dunes, on the rocks and on the trail, it’s an impressive course for tight confines.
