2017 Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari Returns to Ocotillo WellsPosted in News on January 20, 2017
The 2017 Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari will return to its former home at the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area, with the festivities going March 3-5, 2017. Environmental concerns moved the 2016 Desert Safari to a different venue, but the California Fish and Game Commission resolved those worries in December.
Returning to Ocotillo Wells, California, after the brief separation, the Desert Safari should be as exciting and entertaining as ever. Registration is open now, costing just $55.00 per vehicle, with a $10 discount for active and reserve members of the military. Included in that registration is a Tierra Del Sol commemorative plaque, a bumper sticker, a raffle ticket, and a special gift for young (or young-at-heart) off-roaders. Proceeds from the registration will go toward organizations that protect public lands and safeguard the future of off-roading.
On the docket for the weekend is a trail ride on Saturday morning, a raffle on Saturday evening, and a massive fireworks show on Saturday night, happening near the event headquarters at the Truckhaven 4x4 Training Center. The raffle promises $150,000 worth of prizes, so it’d be a shame to miss that one. Additionally, the West Shores Seniors Club will host a Tierra Del Sol breakfast on Sunday morning in Thermal, California.
As with any 4x4 event worth its salt, registering a vehicle for the Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari means making sure it’s up to snuff, safety-wise. Seat belts for each occupant are required, as is a rollbar (or enclosed metal top), a functioning emergency brake or brake lock, mufflers, and a fire extinguisher. The event is open to cars, trucks, SUVs, and side-by-side utility vehicles, and the organization recommends bringing four-wheel-drive vehicles with a low-range transfer case.
We’re happy to see the Desert Safari return to Ocotillo Wells, and you can bet we’ll be there to take in all the action. More information can be found at the Tierra Del Sol website.
