Those of us that call ourselves enthusiasts today, whether of muscle cars, Jeeps, pickups, or anything else with wheels, likely played with some Tonka trucks growing up. Much to the chagrin of our mothers, we spent hours in the back yard on our knees, making “vroom” noises and crawling the trucks up and over any obstacles we could find. Well, some of us never out-grew the “playing with Tonka trucks” phase, and among that group are the product planning and development team at Toyota Australia. To commemorate the Hilux’s enduring popularity down under, the Team started with a 2017 Hilux and outfitted it with a laundry list of off-road hardware and accessories.

The team started off with a Hilux SR5 Double Cab, the highest trim level offered in Australia, equipped with Toyota’s new 1GD-FTV 2.8L turbodiesel I-4 engine. To give the truck more capability and agility on rugged terrain, the truck was fit with a 6-inch lift, portal axles, and 35-inch Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires. A custom front bumper and skidplate were specifically designed to maintain engine and cooling system air flow and remain compatible with the truck’s airbag system. Of course, as is all the current rage, the truck was outfitted with LED lightbars on the roof and front bumper. To further accentuate the truck’s tough demeanor, an air snorkel, aggressive fender flares, and a carbon fiber “power bulge” hood was fitted.

Around back, the truck is fit with a custom carbon fiber-wrapped tailgate with two vent holes and a custom bed cage with the spare tire, diesel fuel cans, and recovery gear, including a fire extinguisher, shovel, axe, and high-lift off-road jack. Unfortunately, there are no production plans for this off-roader’s dream come truck, but you can enjoy this video of it playing in the sand in the meantime.
