SPIED: 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Retains Folding Soft Top Option

Every other day we learn something new about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL, it seems. Today’s tidbit of information is that the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited will hang onto its folding soft top, at least as an option.

We reported last week that one Wrangler enthusiast site had gotten ahold of leaked dealer order information, which stated the JL would be available with a power sliding hardtop, possibly a multi-panel steel or glass fixed roof. That news left us worried that Jeep would lose the fully removable roof for its legendary off-roader. However, as these photos of a cobbled-together prototype reveal, the new Unlimited will join the short-wheelbase Wrangler JL in offering a folding canvas/fabric roof.

This Jeep also wears a different set of taillights than what we showed you recently. Before, we reported that the JL would receive LED tails with a distinctive “X” pattern that recalls a jerrycan, but the test mule seen here has two-color incandescent lamps. However, their shape is similar to what’s seen on the current JK-generation Wrangler, so they could just be placeholders for JL-specific rear lighting.

We don’t know about you, but we’re getting tired of waiting on the 2018 Wrangler JL and Wrangler Unlimited JLU to make their official debut. Unfortunately, we’ll just have to keep being patient, as Jeep’s signature SUV will remain under wraps until the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.
