Ride Along: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Makes Competition Debut at Vegas to RenoPosted in News on August 17, 2017
The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 will make its competition debut this weekend at Best in the Desert’s General Tire “Vegas to Reno” race presented by Fox. At 550 miles, it’s the longest off-road race in America, and the Four Wheeler Network will be riding along with the Hall Racing team in the third seat of its modified ZR2.
The race will begin Friday, August 18 at 9:30 am, and more than 350 participants are expected to start the race. The course will be a good test of the Colorado ZR2’s abilities, as it crosses through a variety of terrain, including desert washes, deep silt, high-speed dry lake beds, and mountain passes at 8,000 feet above sea level.
Hall Racing will campaign the ZR2 in class 7300, which includes production-stock midsize vehicles. The legendary off-road outfit modified the truck with a mandated rollcage, 44-gallon fuel cell, racing seats, and safety harnesses. An off-road GPS system, radio communications, and off-road lighting have also been added. Otherwise, the Hall Racing ZR2 is largely similar to the vehicle you might find at a Chevy dealer: The 3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission remain stock, with a modified version of the stock dynamic suspensions spool valve (DSSV) shock absorbers.
“The Colorado ZR2 is one of the most capable production platforms we’ve used as a foundation for our racing program,” said Chad Hall of Hall Racing. ZR2 adds great technology, like the Multimatic DSSV dampers and the front and rear locking differentials that are vital to stock class desert racing.”
Chevrolet hinted that the Hall Racing development truck might presage future parts and accessories for the Colorado and the Colorado ZR2. “The components being tested on this truck are ultimately intended to take the already-exceptional off-road capability of the Colorado to the next level,” said Russ O’Blenes, director, Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports for General Motors.
Does this mean we’ll see a range of lift kits and huge tires offered by Chevy for the ZR2? Possibly. But it definitely goes to show that the company is committed to motorsports and high performance for its halo vehicles.
