Who is Celebrating 50 Years? Volkswagen and the SCORE Baja 1000

This November, thousands of fans and racers alike will swarm to Ensenada, Mexico, to be at the starting line for the 50th SCORE Baja 1000.

In 1967, the first Baja race had only five checkpoints between Tijuana and La Paz, 950 miles, and of the 68 entries, only 31 finishers. Though the race was popular amongst motorcycle riders, the first team to finish drove a Volkswagen Beetle buggy across the line. And so the Baja Bug was born. These vehicles were inspired by the original Volkswagen Beetle, but modified to withstand the harsh terrain faced by racers in the desert.

50 years later, the 2017 BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 will still have several Volkswagen-themed classes, including one for Beetle vehicles with air-cooled stock engines. This year’s starting festivities will be held for the 43rd time in Ensenada, Mexico, before races embark on the 1200-mile journey to La Paz.

Drivers and navigators will endure long hours in the cockpit, vibrating washboards, bottomless sand pits, and blinding dust clouds, all made more exciting during the nighttime driving hours. Stay tuned to the race this year to see the Baja Bugs conquer the course alongside the trophy trucks, UTVs, and other desert race machines.
