Toyota Teases FT-AC Concept SUV Before LA Auto Show

Back in April, Toyota teased us all with the FT-4X concept, a crossover-based soft-roader with retro design cues and a host of interior features aimed directly at the outdoor-lifestyle crowd. It was cool, and it even had an honest-to-goodness low-range transfer case in its spec chart, leading us to think it might have a future as some kind of cross between the late, lamented FJ Cruiser and a modern RAV4.

But if we liked the FT-4X, something tells us we’re going to love Toyota’s next auto show debut, the Future Toyota Adventure Concept (FT-AC for short). Slated for an appearance at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, the FT-AC could preview a hard-core off-roader from Toyota, something that could give the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon a run for its money.

Although we can’t tell much from the shadowy teaser image Toyota released yesterday (brightened and shown above), the FT-AC’s form factor betrays a bluff front end, angular fender flares, and roof-mounted LED off-road lights. Its stance suggests a truck-based chassis as well, and there’s a pair of tall roof rails up top for extra carrying capacity.

Whether the FT-AC presages a new FJ Cruiser, the next-generation 4Runner midsize SUV, or a one-off design study, we don’t know. But we won’t have to wait long, as Toyota will pull the sheets off its new baby on November 30. For folks who can’t attend the LA Auto Show, the company will livestream the reveal at the link below.
