Tesla ringleader Elon Musk tweeted that an all-electric pickup would be coming from the manufacturer immediately following the launch of the Model Y small crossover.

“I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y,” Musk tweeted. “Have had the core design/engineering elements in my mind for almost 5 years. Am dying to build it.”

In response to another Twitter user inquiring about its size, Musk tweeted the as-yet-unnamed pickup would be sized like the F-150, perhaps a bit larger “to account for a gamechanging (I think) feature I’d like to add” [sic].

Tesla has had an exciting year, revealing its long-expected Semi, built for regional deliveries with a range of up to 500 miles. It also announced plans to build the Model Y, a small crossover based on the Model 3 sedan’s platform and with styling similar to the larger Model X crossover.

The Model Y is expected to go into production sometime in 2019 according to Automotive News , giving Tesla’s lineup a suggestive backronym: S-3-X-Y. As such, we don’t expect the pickup (possible name Model U, although one Twitter user suggested a tongue-in-cheek “Model AF”) to arrive until at least 2020. However, Tesla will likely reveal a prototype of the big truck as early as next year.
