In 2015 we learned that Bentley’s Bentayga SUV is actually pretty off-road-capable. Now Bentley has found a way to make their flagship SUV even sportier, by adding a twin-turbo V-8 to its line. The new 4.0L, 32-valve V-8 produces 542 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, pushing the 7,000-pound SUV to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, topping out at 180 mph. The new V-8 is designed to be both sporty and efficient, with stop/start and cylinder deactivation technology contributing to its 464-mile range and 24.8mpg fuel efficiency. In the theme of making the Bentayga sportier Bentley also added optional carbon ceramic brakes, twin-quad tailpipes, high-gloss carbon-fiber interior panels, and a wood and hide steering wheel.
While it’s being pitched as the sportier of the line, the V-8 Bentayga actually sits in between the other Bentayga models as far as performance is concerned. Bentayga models featuring the 600hp 6.0L W-12 gas engine do 0-60 in 4.0 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than the V-8. The W-12 also has the ability to top out at 187 mph, just slightly faster than the V-8. Bentley claims the W-12 models are the fastest SUVs in the world. Below the Bentayga V-8 in performance, but well above it in fuel efficiency, is the Bentayga Diesel, which runs on a 42hp 4.0L V-8 that boasts a 1,000-mile range and fuel economy numbers that hit nearly 40 mpg city. While the V-8 Bentayga doesn’t seem like anything too special compared to the other models, it offers one thing Bentley owners and luxury car owners love—options.
