Mercedes-Benz Promises Timeless G-Class DNA in Teaser for 2019 Model

Mercedes-Benz is teasing the fully redesigned 2019 G-Class on YouTube in a video that recalls that old dinosaur-movie schtick: an ancient strand of DNA, encased in amber and resurrected for the modern era.

The video, called “Stronger than Time,” opens with an incredibly brief peek at the 2019 G-Class—and the changes are so slight that we’re not even positive it’s the new version we’re looking at here. Then we get a look at a water strider encased in amber. Then a housefly encased in amber. Then a mosquito encased in amber. Then some other bug encased in amber. And finally, a fullsize 1979 Geländewagen encased in—you guessed it—amber. The ad then promises that “the DNA lives on” in the 2019 model.

It’s definitely a bit odd for a luxury brand to liken one of its most recognizable products to a bunch of prehistoric insectoids, but somehow, the simile fits. Indeed, one of the G-Wagen’s most endearing qualities is its deliberate obsolescence: this truck is proudly, defiantly old school in all the best ways. After all, the 2018 G-Class still carries the same model designation as the 1990, itself an only slightly updated version of the platform that first debuted for 1979.

And just like Jurassic Park’s story-forming mosquito, Mercedes-Benz promises the 2019 G-Class will bring that automotively ancient DNA to a modern era. That news inspires hope for fans of the G-Class, folks who fell in love with the SUV’s upright stance, squared-off side glass, and bank-vault door latches.

Benz will reveal the vehicle at an event in Detroit on January 15, so we’re less than two weeks away from seeing how well the company did at porting 1979 genes into a 2019 G-Class. You can bet we’ll be watching closely until then.
