Jeep is no stranger to special editions. The beloved Jeep Wrangler JK, for example, was available in six different option packages—each with its own unique styling—beyond the usual Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon trim levels. For example, if you wanted a bare-bones interior but some added off-road capability, you’d probably want the Wrangler JK Willys Wheeler. If you were keen on boulevard style, there was Altitude. And a life of max-attack trail action meant you were destined for the Rubicon Recon.
But when the all-new 2018 Wrangler JL was introduced, it was available in just the core trim levels: inexpensive Sport, stylish Sport S, luxurious Sahara, and rugged Rubicon. That will soon change with the reveal of Jeep’s first special-edition JL, the Moab. Based on the Wrangler Sahara, the Moab Edition gets the sculpted hood of the Rubicon, as well as steel bumpers with removable corners, LED head- and taillights, and the Rubicon’s 17-inch wheels mounted on meaty 32-inch mud tires.
Further enhancing capability are the Rubicon’s rock rails, as well as a Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive. The Moab also gets some stylish new additions, including matte black paint on the wheels, headlight surrounds, and grille openings; a very cool Moab decal on the hood; and a body-color hardtop (the Dual Top Group is available, as is the Sky One-Touch power top).
Inside, it’s standard Sahara fare, plus the Leather Group (leather trim on the seats and dashboard with contrast stitching), blind-spot monitoring, an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system with navigation, and premium Alpine audio. A heated steering wheel, heated seats, and remote start come as part of the optional Cold Weather Group, and a trailering package is also available.
We presume that, like the Sahara, the Moab Edition will be available in four-door Wrangler Unlimited form only. And we’re not positive of the Moab’s powertrain offerings: If they mirror the Sahara, it’ll be a standard 3.6L V-6 engine and six-speed manual transmission (with an optional eight-speed auto) or an optional eTorque 2.0L turbocharged I-4 that comes standard with the slushbox.
There’s still no word on pricing, but given it’s a 2018 model, it will probably be in dealers very soon.
